Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar // Night Markets, Star Courts and Desi goodness

GOODREADS // AMAZON // BOOK DEPOSITORY The daughter of a star and a mortal, Sheetal is used to keeping secrets. Pretending to be "normal." But when an accidental flare of her starfire puts her human father in the hospital, Sheetal needs a full star's help to heal him. A star like her mother, who returned to the sky long ago. Sheetal's quest to save her father will take her to a celestial court of shining wonders and dark shadows, where she must take the stage as her family's champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens--and win, or risk never returning to Earth at all. This gorgeously imagined YA debut blends shades of Neil Gaiman's Stardust and a breathtaking landscape of Hindu mythology into a radiant contemporary fantasy.   ( A huge thank you to the  HOV Tours  and HarperTeen for the eARC and the opportunity to be a part of this blog tour.  ~When a book sees you~      Yes I am absolutely going to s

Fantastically Diverse: My TBR

Hola Amigos! This is my TBR for the Diverse Fantasy Read-A-Thon I'm conducting. For details check out my Master Post here.

I'm going to participate as a Level 2 participant. 14 books in 56 days which gives me 4 days for each books. Sounds kinda easy but no saying if I'll get enough time considering my exams are in March!

Level 2- AROUND THE WORLD TWICE

MY TBR
❤ As the name implies, the Protagonist/ Main character should be a person of colour. (The other characters in the story may or may not fall under the category of PoC)

♥ Shadowshaper - WHY? Art, music and stories to connect to spirits, Caribbean legends and gorgeous graffiti! And there is so much diversity in this book. Also I hear from reviewers that the book along with the supernatural elements, also addresses many social issues. PSYCHED for this book!

♥ Binti - WHY? A Science Fiction short story with a PoC protagonist is not a common occurence!! Bring it on!!
❤ This includes retellings of non-western myths and legends such as Alladin, 1001 Nights etc.

♥ The Forbidden Wish - WHY? It's a retelling of AladdinALADDIN. Enough said.

♥ The Wrath and the Dawn - WHY? It's inspired by A Thousand and One Nights. I've always loved that story because it's basically a story about stories! And The Wrath and the Dawn has a frigging awesome heroine!
❤ The Protagonists have to belong to the LGBTQ category.

♥ Labyrinth Lost - WHY? Okay so those who are regular visitors to my blog must have seen this gorgeous book in my TTTs a lot of times! It sounds so magical and dark and it has stayed on my TBR for WAY too long!

♥ Timekeeper - WHY? Okay so know Di@Book Reviews by Di? She's one of the reasons my TBR looks ready to explode :P She read and reviewed this quite a while ago and I remember she loved it! Also I've never read Steampunk before! ever! So i think now would be good time to start.
❤ As the name implies, not just the protagonist but there are other PoC characters too. NOT EVERY character has to be a PoC but a majority of the characters need to fall under the category. (Most of the fantasy books set in a non western setting will fall under this category)

♥ Stormdancer - WHY? Because I LOVED Nevernight by Jay Kristoff ! And this is the first in an epic fantasy trilogy! There is oodles of Japanese culture, bad-ass fighters and much more awesomeness :)

♥ The Ghost Bride - WHY? There are Chinese superstitions and myths and there's ghosts and afterlife and the cover is beautiful...I think I might be rambling (but I don't really care)
❤ Diverse Fantasy meant for middle grade. (Doesn't mean adults can't read them you guys! I love so many middle grade books and read them even now!)

♥ The Lost Hero - WHY? Because I'll basically read anything by Rick Riordan because he writes freaking amazingly and I'm angry with myself for not having started this earlier!

Breadcrumbs - WHY? It's a retelling of Hans Christian Anderson's 'The Snow Queen'. The young protagonist is from India and has been adopted by American parents. If that isn't reason enough for me to read this book, I don't know what is!

❤ The book must feature a disabled character (not a background character but a prominent character). The disability could be physical as well as intellectual or developmental. This also includes mental illnesses and PTSD.

♥ Otherbound - WHY? This book has so much diversity guys! The author herself has mentioned that the both the leads are physically disabled and PoC. And there are queer ladies in the book. Also this book has the most interesting premise ever!

♥ Viral Nation - WHY? The lead is autistic and I keep reading in the Goodreads reviews that the dystopian world is well written so is the main character's condition.
❤ Go ahead and pick up any diverse fantasy book from your TBR. This will help you get to tackling your TBR too!

♥ The Girl with Ghost eyes - WHY? Because the premise is like nothing I've heard before. There is so much Chinese magic and Asian folklore in this book!

♥ Ink (Paper Gods #1) - WHY? The cover! Set in Japan! Drawings that move! How can I not read this??

So that is my TBR folks! Looking forward to seeing yours

  1. I didn't really enjoy Viral Nation when I tried it..I liked the idea of the autistic character but lost interests when the Mean Girls trope appeared! Hope you have a better time with it!
